Mic not working through audio splitter

A few month ago I bought  a gaming headset with a microphone and it had 2 jacks and my laptop had only one so I bought a splitter, the mic worked for a few month then it suddenly stopped working properly, I bought another splitter and it didn’t work, bought another mic and it didn’t work tried both mics on a different computer with 2 jacks and they worked, so the problem is not in the splitter nor the mic, its in the windows itself so I tried to download Realtek audio driver but the sound was worse, I deleted.
also when I plug in the splitter  without plugging in the mic it makes the same sound when I plug the mic into the splitter

Hello DomeFrex, it’s totally normal that your computer makes the same sound when you plug the splitter either with or without the microphone since your computer has only one input and it only cares about producing such a sound when something is connected to it.

Now let’s think about the problem, we have two possibilities: this might be a hardware or a software issue. First of all, I want you to make sure you have the realtek audio driver from your laptop manufacturer’s official website, it’s the best place to get the right driver from since you’re going to specify your device there. If you have a problem locating it, please reply with your laptop model number and I’ll redirect you to it myself.

Another thought, don’t forget to check your Microphone privacy settings as we explain in our article https://win10faq.com/fix-microphone-settings

Finally, this might be a hardware issue of course, I would recommend that you check with the manufacturer’s hardware support in case your audio port/card needs to be replaced but let’s go for this one after we make sure it’s not a software issue.

I’ll be waiting for your reply, don’t hesitate to ask for further help. Good luck!

Hello Mina, first of all I appreciate your help, second I tried to install realtek from the official website of my laptop’s manufacture and there was two problems, the sound quality decreased significantly and also my built in mic in the camera wasn’t working so well and the other mic didn’t make any sound too.
So this a hardware issue, is there any way I can fix it without calling  the support? this laptop is almost 3 years old so I don’t think I might find the best parts for it, probably.
Thanks!

I have exactly the same issue, Mic just stopped to work through splitter.

Drivers are the latest (official).

Mic is ON in Privacy settings and allowed for usage for all apps.

The same headset with the same splitter works fine on different laptop.

When I insert another headset where is only one plug, then sound and mic works fine. But when I use another headset with 2 plugs – one for mic and one for audio with a splitter (because I have only one socket in laptop), then microphone just don’t want to work.

Funny thing that it worked and just stopped in some moment!

I tried EVERYTHING, literally, privacy setting, set as default, reinstall realtek drivers. I also seen the link you provided there and followed all steps. Nothing helps, nothing.

Also funny thing that it starts to work sometimes, when I plug and unplug it, OR remove “default” from microphone in realtek manager and put it back again.

But after a while Mic stop to work again, without any reason, just stop. It’s unbelievable…

Oh I see it’s crazy and you’re right sometimes it just works without any causes and stops the same way it starts. But if any of you wants to try something more, you may go for a USB sound card or USB splitter which takes the two jacks audio and microphone and connects them to the computer using CMD. They are more likely to work anyway.

Yes, I was also thinking about USB splitter, but the problem is that I don’t have free USB slot in my laptop, so I would need to buy some USB hub as well.

Well, seems it’s the only option now.

Thanks anyway.

No problem, just make sure to combine any two USBs together and let the one with the headset out of the hub, plug it directly to an existing USB to avoid any bugs.

ahh I’m not really into that, I tried to look for it at many stores but couldn’t find, and I can only find it online but its way expensive there, well I guess it’s the only option. Thanks anyway

Yeah I see… Always welcome man!

Just got the USB splitter, still have the same problem, it makes the same sound with or without plugging in the mic, is there any reason for that?

on December 17, 2018

Oh that’s really disappointing I see… Please send me your laptop model number, I’ll take a look at a few things and come back to you.

Damn, I haven’t received my USB splitter yet, but my PC is Lenovo Legion Y520, i7

Hey guys, I checked both your laptops and they are fully compatible with Windows 10… So maybe I need to ask this: Did you have Windows 10 since the first day or did you update it from a previous Windows 7/8/8.1?

I found nothing other than what’s written in the article so this is pretty weird.

I had win10 directly when bought my laptop.

Anyway, I just got my USB splitter and headset works perfectly. Sound and mic is working through USB. So problem is solved for me for now. I hope it will not break again in the future 🙂

Welcome back ajva, I’m so glad it worked for you. Can you refer the one you bought? Maybe Domefrex can replace his with one of yours and see if it works for him. It won’t break I hope.
