Update renders Windows inaccessible

Hi, after allowing the insisted upon update to initiate, my laptop now can’t access windows. After powering it on, I am asked which keyboard layout I want. After selecting “US” I am taken to another blue screen with options for a rollback, use a device for windows recovery, using another operating system, troubleshoot, or turn off PC. I have explored all of these options and nothing works. If I put a Windows install disc in the disc drive, it recognizes that an upgrade was started and gives me two choices. One is to remove the disc and continue the upgrade. I do this and I’m taken back to the blue screen of options. The other option is to do a clean install. I have not tried that yet because I don’t want to lose apps. Has anyone else seen this problem?

I have tried safe mode and am unsuccessful there. I have tried the waiting for the Windows logo during power up but the logo never appears. It goes from pc manufacturer to blue screen.

Side note: I am sometimes able to get to the windows login screen but it doesn’t recognize my username and/or password. It also doesn’t give me the option of system admin and it does not respond to ctrl+alt+del.

Is my only recourse a clean install?

Hello amesork, I’ve been just looking for a solution for it and this is all I got:
It seems like a driver issue. Do you remember having any problem with some drivers (especially USB drivers, mouse, keyboard, webcam), if yes, I would recommend that you uninstall them in safe mode and then try to restart. If you’re still stuck, then you should fix your Windows using a bootable Windows DVD or USB flash drive.
Plug/insert it into your computer and then launch CMD prompt from the blue screen and type these commands:

chkdsk c: /f
bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /rebuildbcd
bcdboot c:\windows /s c:
see if it works. Some credits go to http://www.thewindowsclub.com/windows-10-upgrade-stuck-choose-keyboard-layout-screen
Will be waiting for your reply! Good luck

Hi, sorry about the delay. It turns out that my registry was corrupt and it is suspected that some sort of malware is the culprit. All functionality was normal as far as drivers went. I was not able to enter safe mode and any repair options and attempts such as your suggestion were unsuccessful. After several different steps of trying to rebuild/access the registry through DOS (I guess it’s not called that anymore) my dad (retired IT guy) was able to get Windows to kind of work. I’m not sure what all he did. Anyway, at that point my desktop was gone so it was not out of the woods by any means. After more research and trial/error to rebuild/access that, my husband was finally able to get it to a point where there was an option to re-install Windows with a boot disc without losing files or apps. After that was done, it was showing signs of life. He ran some malware/virus software and it did find some registry attacks. So those were repaired. Windows needed to do some updates which we all held our breath for. Aside from booting up slightly slower now my laptop is functioning as it used to. So my problem was likely not due to a Windows update issue directly, but activated by it. I guess. I’m not as technical as the men in my family but hopefully you can kind of follow my description.

Thank you for your prompt response, by the way!

Hey, welcome back. You’re most welcome! I’m happy after all that you could fix the problem, keep on scanning your computer periodically to prevent this from happening again. I’ll advise people with the same issue to do as you did and maybe it will help other people. Thank you for your contribution… Have the best day ever!
