Win10 not recognising files or folders

Hi all,

I’ve had this PC for 4 years now, never had a problem with it. Two nights ago, I was using some video editing software – which I have been using on this PC since I’ve had it – and the software crashed quite spectacularly.

I did a restart from the start menu, and now Windows 10 doesn’t seem to associate any files with any software, nor will it allow me to open any files. It lets me open some folders, but these folders shortly show up as “Not Responding”.

Desktop/folder icons are all appearing blank, with no program logos or image previews. Firefox seems to be working fine, as does other software when I open it. The problem only seems to be with accessing files and folders.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. I’ve tried a few things so far, but no luck. I’d rather not have to do a full reset, as that would mean having to reinstall Windows and all the software I’m using.

Many thanks!

Hello aress73, I would suggest that first of all, you try to access your files and folders in safe mode, to make sure no particular software is responsible for this. If this works, restarting your computer in normal mode should fix it. If you can’t access your files in safe mode, that means that maybe your Windows needs a reset. You can always reset your Windows without losing your files. If this also doesn’t fix it then it’s definitely a Disk problem.

But let’s just start by checking the issue in safe mode… here’s how you can do it:

  • Type system configuration and then choose System Configuration.system configuration
  • Open the Boot tab and check the Safe mode checkbox, minimal and click OK.safe mode enable
  • Choose Restart to restart you computer now.restart computer again
