Windows not picking up microphone audio input

Updated on October 29, 2018 in Devices

Long story short, windows isn’t picking up sound, I know for a fact it’s not hardware since i’ve changed headsets, motherboards, and nearly every other component since this started, and headset works fine on my laptop. Considering factory reset but would rather avoid.

if it helps any headset is Corsair Void Pro.

As for drivers, i’m using the CUE and have made sure they’re up to date.

on April 29, 2018

Hello Aranix, we should start by downloading the audio driver from your computer manufacturer’s official website. The drivers don’t have to be the latest but the one there should be compatible. Also try to mute and unmute it from the microphone button on your headset. Give these a try and come back, I’ll be happy ti help you further… good luck!

on April 29, 2018

Driver already up to date, but redld, already tried to mute unmute, didn’t help

on April 29, 2018

Manually from the official website? good, give it a couple of restarts and see if it works.

No change

Maybe resetting your Windows (keep my files option) will solve it, think about it and tell me if you need any help.

I can’t create a Discussion for reCAPTCHA not working so here goes….

I can hear myself through my headset and when I turn up the boost in the sound settings I hear my voice get louder but none of my applications are picking up my mic including windows. I just updated to the new April Creator’s Update and I have Realtek Audio Drivers. Please Help ūüôĀ

on May 6, 2018

Hello FinalFantasyNerd,
sorry for the issue, we will check it.
How exactly do you hear yourself? You mean your computer picks your voice right?
In this case, you may be complaining of a privacy issue, check your microphone privacy page and make sure to turn it on for the applications you want. Also, you may need to remove the Exclusive application control over your microphone as it says in our guide https://win10faq.com/fix-microphone-settings/
Last but not least, Microsoft has released a new major updated in the past couple of days, make sure to download and install it and see if you still get the problem. I’ll always be waiting for your replies and will do my best to help you! Good luck :))

Hey greta! Did you check the privacy page in the Settings? You may find that the programs are set to NO access to them, it happened to a lot of people after the last update. Please try this and I’ll be here responding as fast as possible for you. Good luck!

on May 7, 2018

Hey, yeah I see it’s pretty annoying, I couldn’t say more but maybe be a little patient until the new update get new drivers from Microsoft or maybe your computer manufacturer.¬† Did you try to redownload the driver from the official website? Give it a shot.

on May 7, 2018

Also try to check if any of these updates can be uninstalled and fix the problem, they can be found from the uninstall a program page in control panel at the left pane

I’m having the same issue. Only started a couple of days ago, pretty sure it was after the latest big windows update. Either that or I just updated the GeForce drivers too.

I have tried replacing the audio drivers from the Asus website to no avail. Also just deleting the the audio drivers and letting Windows replace them. Plus removing Discord incase it was that.

I have an Asus GL502VS, any ideas!?!?

Thanks
Rick

on May 7, 2018

A G502VS sorry.

on May 7, 2018

It’s so sad yeah, maybe a little patience until Asus offers a new driver that’s compatible with the new update or maybe Microsoft itself fixes it. Check this page from time to time to see if they update the driver
https://www.asus.com/supportonly/G502VS/HelpDesk_Download/
and also try to uninstall the latest update if possible from your control panel, check the comment above.

on May 8, 2018

I rolled back the update last night and it isn’t working again now. I will just wait and update in a while!

Thanks for your your response!

on May 9, 2018

Yeah I think the only solution is to wait now :/ You’re always welcome!

My mic is working on all the devices except the custom built which i bought a 3 days ago and when i¬† see the recording devices beside the mic icon the green bars are rising when i speak but the mic doesn’t work on other applications like when i play games my teammates can’t hear me. please help me.

on May 16, 2018

Hello AMG,
well, it looks like your microphone works after all and that’s relaxing. All what I think you have to do is to disable any other recording device in the list, then your default recording device will be the one left (your mic) and then you’ll be able to use it. Otherwise, I would recommend that you check your microphone settings from inside the game control panel or any VOIP programs like Discord, Skype, TeamSpeak … etc to make sure that the recording device they are using is your desired mic.
I hope this solves your problem but if it doesn’t please don’t hesitate to come back and tell me, I’ll be happy to help you. Good luck!

Hi
I turned off microsoft updates.. but it is still updating my computer when I don’t want it too.
After one of these FORCED updates.. where it changed my background and installed microsoft edge.. which I DIDNT WANT AT ALL!!! now all of a sudden it is not picking up my microphone/audio input.. shows no volume when i go to the device, i have updated drivers, uninstalled, rebooted, installed from device webpage, disabled/re-enabled, done literally every fix mentioned in any post/article/forum so far and nothing works.. WTF is this bullshit with windows auto updating and fucking up my audio input??
I know its not the device as I have 3 seperate brand new devices that all worked 100% perfect before this auto update.
I can also use the same device on my ps4 and no issues.. so it is for sure something windows related.
Please help with this issue! Have no clue what else to do or try.
Thanks microsoft for messing up my perfectly tuned game machine with your auto updates.. talk about frustration!

on May 31, 2018

Hey, I completely understand your feeling… Can you find any recovery point saved so that you can go back and restore back to the point before the update, then follow this guide to disable Windows update completely:
https://win10faq.com/windows-modules-installer-worker-using-high-cpu-fix/
I hope you can find a way to this, I’ll keep on helping you just keep me updated. Good luck!

My headset was working completely fine, and few days ago, my laptop stopped reading the microphone from the headphones. So, it’s like it isn’t even plugged in, but it is. The sound works perfect, but the microphone doesn’t.¬†

Also, the headset works fine on any other device except my laptop. Any suggestions? I tried everything, nothing worked.

Thank you.

on June 1, 2018

Hello macc3108, I think maybe your computer has installed some updates the day you noticed the issue, can you check your update history and restore points and see if you can recover it back to old state?
But you may try this one first: go to your laptop manufacturer’s official website and download the latest audio driver there, install it manually and give your laptop a couple of restarts.
Finally, don’t forget to check the microphone privacy settings page and make sure you’re enabling its use among applications. Good luck with it and I’ll be there ready to help you further!

on June 1, 2018

Hello again. I installed the audio driver, it didn’t work. I checked the microphone privacy settings, everything is on.¬†

When I talk with my headset plugged in, the microphone doesn’t work, but the laptop’s microphone works, and no one can hear me. I also checked for updates, but the last one was in March, and this issue appeared a few days ago. The update that was in May is for the anti virus, but I don’t think that’s the problem.
Something else I could try? Thank you again.

on June 2, 2018

Hey, I would suggest that you disable all the other microphone devices (including the laptop’s microphone and Stereo Mix) and set your headset’s as default, also from inside the applications you are using the headset in, change the microphone settings and set it as you want. Restart your computer and see if it’s fixed.

Hi, I can’t start a discussion either so what happens to me is:
I’m, running bootcamp from mac Windows 10 latest update. I’ve got a Microphone TRUST Primo Desk that works perfectly on the Mac side but on the Windows side no. I’ve tried everything that was in the web and it still doesn’t work. I’ve also reinstalled Windows and it still doesn’t work. Whan can I do? Thanks

on June 23, 2018

Hey Nicholas. I’ve looked for your problem and seems like it’s a big one and most of people couldn’t make it work. But they suggested to use some USB microphones. Also, make sure you downloaded the Bootcamp drivers on your Windows 10. Let me know if any of these work. Good luck!

Hello. I have had the same issue as many others have stated post-Windows update (that happened without me telling it to, I knew this had been a problem so I tried to not let it update) with my audio being completely nonfunctional. I have updated my drivers, made sure the devices (vanilla laptop microphone and speakers) were the enabled and default devices, ensured the privacy settings were correct, and restarted my laptop (Acer Aspire E 15) multiple times, to no avail. Now, when I click the sound button on the lower right corner, it tells me that the audio service is not running. When I turn it on/run the troubleshooter, it gets stuck on the “Detecting additional problems” part and never ends (I have left it alone to ‘think about it’ for upwards of 40 minutes with no response). I am not able to bring my laptop in anywhere, so if there is a way to fix this that I could reasonably do from my home that would be highly appreciated. I have to do video calls and other things on my laptop that require my audio for my classes/research, so it is very important to me to get this fixed. Thank you.

on June 23, 2018

Hello rdl0010, I would suggest that you search for the audio driver at Acer’s website :
https://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/drivers
I tried my best to find your laptop but it seems like not listed, would you check for the product or serial number and search for it, then download and install the audio drivers from there, then restart your computer and see if it works. I’ll be waiting for your reply.
